Joseph Nagel, Ph.D.

Joseph Nagel, Ph.D. is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with over thirty five years of clinical experience. He received his doctorate in 1984 from the University of North Texas. After completing his internship at the Woodburn Community Mental Health Clinic, Annandale, Virginia, he took his first position as a staff psychologist at the Orange Mental Health Clinic in Orange, Virginia as their Child Specialist in 1980. He advanced to be their Clinic Director and left to start his private practice in 1987.

In the early 1990’s he was dividing his time between his private practice in Orange; as the Child Psychologist at Pediatrics Associates, Charlottesville, VA; and as an Adjunct Professor training/supervising doctoral students in the Center for Clinical Psychology at the University of Virginia. In 1995 he chose to devote all of his time to the practice in Orange.

Dr. Nagel has experience with child and adolescent treatment, as well as the treatment of adults, families, and couples. He treats anxiety disorders; mood disorders such as depression and bipolar disorder; ADD/ADHD; Attachment Disorder (AD) and Child/Parent attachment issues; relationship difficulties, PTSD and trauma related adjustment issues; complicated grief and grieving; and substance abuse related issues.

He has certification with the National Child Traumatic Stress Network as a Trauma Focused-Cognitive Behavior Therapy (TF-CBT) therapist. He was trained and supervised by the Ainsworth Attachment Clinic in Charlottesville, Virginia which utilizes the Circle of Security Model in working with families encountering attachment related difficulties.

Michael D. Dowen, Psy.D.

Michael Dowen, Psy.D. is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with over thirty five years of experience working in inpatient and outpatient mental health facilities. He completed his undergraduate studies in experimental psychology at Indiana University and he attended graduate school at the Illinois School of Professional Psychology in Chicago, where he received his doctorate. He did his internship at the University of Virginia and then worked in community mental health at Rappahannock Rapidan Community Services for sixteen years. He has been in private practice with Psychology Associates since 2002.

Dr. Dowen works with children, adolescents and adults with mood and anxiety disorders, as well as individuals with chronic mental illness, intellectual disabilities and Autism Spectrum Disorder. He conducts comprehensive ADHD evaluations and forensic evaluations (i.e. Competency to Stand Trial and Sanity at the Time of the Offense) for the local court systems. In addition, he is the mental health consultant to the Central Virginia Regional Jail in Orange, Virginia.

He treats Major Depression, Anxiety Disorders, Bipolar Disorder, PTSD, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, ADHD, etc. utilizing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Mindfulness.
